Collagen

Collagen is a protein, naturally found in the human body. It’s made of amino acids, glycerin, proline and hydroxyproline and is found in connective tissue, skin, tendons, bones and cartilage. While our body naturally produces collagen, we can also include it in our diet by integrating chicken, fish as well as supplements, which are very popular along with topical treatments with the purpose of preventing signs of ageing. Additionally, it has moisturising and humectant properties.

While collagen production inevitably declines with age, some factors in lifestyle you can avoid can fuel premature ageing, including;

  • Smoking Cigarettes

  • Excessive Drinking

  • Overconsumption of sugar and highly-processed food

  • Sun exposure

  • Not eating enough Proteins, Vitamin C, Vegetables and Fruits. These foods are crucial to the protection of collagen degradation and reduction of inflammation.

While supplements can be a great addition with a few benefits, basic needs should be the main focus. Not in any way are collagen powders and capsules indispensable since the same amino acids of which collagen is made are also found in animal protein sources such as meat, poultry, dairy and fish.
