Is Patch Testing Worth it?

Patch testing is one of the most common words you will see when it comes to product recommendation. You patch test by applying a small amount of the new product on a designated area of skin, first in the elbow crease and next on your face, which preferably isn’t the most visible. After doing so, wait for at least 24h to see if your skin shows any reactions. If not, the product should be fine to use. Of course if burning or discomfort occurs, remove the product by washing it off immediately.

This is called a self-patch test. Often, dermatologists perform extensive epicutaneous patch tests on the back of patients with long lists of separate product ingredients to establish the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis.

This method is used to avoid bad reactions to a change in your routine and is highly recommended for those with sensitive skin or high-concentration products.
